Setting up an alumni fund for a fraternity (or any other university-based, or scholarly organization) is a great way to keep former graduates active in the life of your organization.

In order to set up an alumni fund, you should ask yourself whether you think that your alumni would be more inclined to make a tax deductible donation, than just a simple donation with no benefits. If you can provide donors with a tax receipt, you will be far more likely to collect larger sums of money. Therefore, your first step should be to see how you could set up such an arrangement for your organization. If you do not have charitable status, you need to find a charity or foundation that would be willing to cooperate with you. In other words, alumni would send their cheques to this charity, which would then transfer this money to you (minus a small deduction), and would then issue your alumni with tax receipts.

Once you have this very central question settled, you need to ask yourself what money raised through your alumni fund will be used for. Will you issue student scholarships or grants for members, or do you plan to use it to expand or renovate you facilities? You need to be specific in terms of what you will use the fund for, as it will be far easier to convince people to donate if they know where their money is going.

You should also be sure to have an updated list of alumni, with everyone's current contact information. A good idea to jump start your alumni fund would be to invite them to a special dinner, where you can place a form for donations and an envelope on each chair.

A prepaid weekly visit by intinerate belly dancers & strippers (for the cultural aspect). Also continuous free flowing cold imported beer on tap with generous capacity heavy duty plastic cups, a perpetually showing large screen projection television supplied with the latest Dvds showing alternately with reruns of "Animal House" and daily airdropped amply sized bags of 'hot' Fast Foods, varying every night between such delicacies as pizzas, chilidogs, Chinese etc, or yeah, Maid service with optional bulldozing capability available. These address only bare essentials, so-called basics, so an emergency fund dispensing appliance like say a ATM machine is required also at no cost to the user. Limits are acceptable, for no more than twice a day withdrawals. Sounds good but I'll double check the soundness of this proposal for more options, though!
