What Is An Opening At An Art Gallery Like?

Answer Question

1 Answer - Sort by: Date | Rating

Art galleries and museums often host 'openings' of exhibitions. They usually take place in the evening and are a social gathering in which to introduce the exhibition to the public. Openings are often attended by those who receive invitations, but many galleries are open to the visiting public during openings. After all, the purpose is to sell art, and the more potential customers, the better! At openings, refreshments including soft drinks and wine may be served. Gallery and museum openings are considered a place to network and socialize as well as view and possibly purchase art.

If you are not experienced at attending openings, the first one you attend can be a bit daunting. It can sometimes seem like attending a party in which you don't know anyone. However, this is only a first impression and soon you will realize that the purpose is to appreciate the works of art on the walls. The art can be a great conversation piece and welcome 'ice breaker' during a gallery opening.
