Sleep deprivation can affect language. The temporal lobe of the cerebral cortex is related to speaking. When people who are well-rested take verbal tests, brain scans show a lot of activity in this area of the brain. In sleep-deprived people, this activity is reduced or non-existent. The symptoms of affected speech are slurring. It is believed that even people who are sleep-deprived are able to respond to verbal tests because other areas of the brain compensate for the temporal lobe. The frontal lobe of the brain is also affected during sleep deprivation. It is partly responsible for speaking as well as creative thought. Tests have shown that people who are sleep-deprived have a harder time thinking of creative ideas.
These are just a couple of the symptoms of people who are sleep-deprived. The condition can also affect other things like reaction time when driving. As well, it affects the body's health as well as mood.
The amount of sleep each person needs depends on a number of factors. Infants generally require about 16 hours a day. Teenagers need about 9 hours usually. For many adults, 7 to 8 hours appears to be the right amount. Yet, some people may need as few as 5 hours or as many as 10 hours of sleep. Women in early pregnancy may need more sleep and people 65 tend to sleep less.
