Is There More Than One Ocean On The Earth?

Answer Question

There is really only one ocean, as in a body of water, as all oceans are connected and make up one continuous watery layer. This covers 70 per cent of the surface of the Earth.

People have divided the oceans up into areas and called them by different names, depending where they are. The five main oceans are the Atlantic, Pacific, Indian, Arctic and Antarctic oceans.

The Pacific ocean is the largest; it is 180 million square kilometres in area and is bigger than the area of all the land masses of the Earth combined.

The water of the Earth is also made up of smaller portions – the seas and lakes. Seas such as the Mediterranean Sea are enclosed by land and are only open to the oceans via narrow straights. Lakes are bodies of water that are completely enclosed by land and are usually freshwater rather than saltwater.
