Ear correction surgery is a fairly straightforward procedure that can be carried out under local anaesthetic with mild sedation in most adults and older children. It therefore does not require an overnight stay in hospital.
However, care must be taken for a couple of weeks after the surgery to ensure that the ears heal in the correct position, otherwise, the ears will not be the desired shape. For the first week at least, you must wear a large headbandage that covers both ears. This comes off when the stitches are removed about 10 days after the operation but, after that, surgeons advise that you wear a tennis band to keep your ears close to your head.
This may not be possible at work or school, but it should be worn at home and especially at night, when the ears can easily become flattened by different sleeping positions. You can wash your hair after two weeks, but avoid swimming for a month.
