What Is A Prompt Side?

Prompt side refers to the left side of the stage. It is often known by its abbreviated form of PS. The left side of the stage is according to the side facing the audience. The prompt side traditionally referred to where the prompt corner is located. Thus prompt side is a term used in theatre and stage terminology. The prompter sits on this side of the stage and provides cues to the actors on the stage.

The prompter ensures that the actors remember their scenes and dialogues in the proper sequence and thus look after the proper and smooth flow of the play. The left side is considered as the prompt side in Britain while it is the right side which is considered as the prompt side in United States. This term has been in existence since the eighteenth century.
