Can Disabled People Ski?

Answer Question

2 Answers - Sort by: Date | Rating

Yes disabled people can enjoy skiing in much the same way as able bodied people.  'Disabled' skiing is usually referred to as adaptive skiing.
If someone has a physical disability, then they can have special 'snowboards' made for them which protect the legs but enable them to whizz down the ski slopes.  There are also supportive skis, which can assist people who have various impairments which may mean their legs are not as strong as able bodied people.
If someone has a learning disability or is partially sighted/blind then they too can ski with support from a helper or assistant.
Adapted skiing is part of the Paralympics and is enjoyed by thousands of people each year.
There are around 23 centres in the UK where disabled people can learn to ski with support from suitably qualified instructors who can offer a range of lessons, according to the person's specific needs and requirements.
