Can You Fit An Overdrive To A Land Rover Defender?

Answer Question

1 Answer - Sort by: Date | Rating

While it is more commonly associated as a modification to a Series Land Rover, it is possible to fit an overdrive to a Defender.
GKN developed and overdrive unit for Defenders, which can improve economy depending on how and where you drive. The main advantage of the overdrive is that it provides extra high gearing which can prove useful if you do a substantial amount of motorway or dual carriageway driving. At lower speeds on minor roads, the impact would be much less noticeable.

The overdrive costs around £1000 new, you would be hard pressed to find a decent second hand one. So, for example, if you had a 110, fuel consumption might improve by 3 mpg, you would then have to drive about 55,000 miles for the overdrive to pay for itself.

If you are asking the question for reasons of improving fuel consumption primarily, then you might, for around the same amount of money, end up better off converting to LPG.
