The Gila monster is a type of poisonous lizard that can be found in the deserts in the southwestern part of the United States. It is a large, lethargic lizard that measures up to two feet long. Its skin looks like it has coloured beads over in elaborate patterns. It is a member of the same family as the Mexican beaded lizard. As opposed to most snakes, the Gila monster injects venom into the prey by means of grooves in the teeth of the lower jaw. The venom is only generated in small amounts that get into the lizard's saliva.
In the year 2005, the FDA (Food and Drug Administration) of America passed approval for a drug for a kind of diabetes that is actually an artificially made variant of a protein that is obtained from the saliva of the Gila monster.
