Is There Such A Language As Manx?

Answer Question

1 Answer - Sort by: Date | Rating

Yes there is a language called Manx and it is one of the 'Celtic' languages along with Irish and Scottish. It is developed from the 'Old Norse' language which Vikings used to speak and it did used to be extremely common. However, the English came and over time most Manx speakers learned to speak English and that eventually became their first language. This meant that the Manx language wasn't as well known as it used to be.

It is thought that the last known people to speak the language were people in the 1950's. However, there are groups set up today who are trying to gain the language back. However, whether it will take off or not is a different matter altogether.

Today the language is spoken on the Isle of Man and most primary schools are now teaching the language to the children. The government has given a lot of support to the Manx language and it could easily become more popular as time goes on.
