I'm Trying To Decide Whether Or Not To Have Luxating Patella (dislocated Kneecap) Surgery Done On My Dog??

I have a 3yr. Old terrier mix and she has a bad knee - one vet says surgery, another says lose weight....she limps and has problems getting up on the bed etc. I have her on lite food and she has lost a pound or two.

If you question the recommendation of your vet as far as putting your dog through surgery and the other vet says to loose the weight, there are a couple of things I would take into consideration.

First, how over weight is your dog,how much does she need to loose and can it be done in a short amount of time. I agree that loosing the weight will help with the knee pain, but I doubt it will fix the actual problem. However, you could try keeping your dog on a strict diet and see if the limping subsides after your dog drops a few more pounds. Then you can re-evaluate the condition.

Another thing to think about is the fact that your dog is young and has a lot of years left. I have no doubt that you would like your dog to live a happy and playful life. Surgery is expensive and take quiet a bit of time to heal from. However, I have seen many dogs go through this surgery and have recovered fully.

The other option is to get a third opinion from another vet. Personally, I think a combination of surgery and loosing weight will help your terrier live a very healthy and happy life. Good luck!
