A group of seven islands, located off the north-west coast of Africa, directly off the coast of Morroco; and south-west of Spain, are known as the Canary Islands. The seven Islands that make up the Canary Islands are Tenerife, Lanzarote, Fuerteventura, Gran Canaria, Hierro, Gomera and La Palma. In 1496 the Canary Islands became part of the Spanish Kingdom and remain a part of Spain to this day. Each individual island, all volcanic in origin, is considerably different than the next and all with a unique terrain of their own.
The original population, known as 'Guanches' of the islands were tall, fair skinned and it is believed that the women, as opposed to the men, were the leaders. With a temperate climate, nice temeratures year round and lots of sunshine, the Canary Islands attract many visitors, especially from all over Europe, to enjoy their white and black sand beaches and their turquiose waters.
