Can Aphasia Be Treated?

Answer Question

1 Answer - Sort by: Date | Rating

If the Aphasia is caused by a stroke, often a spontaneous recovery occurs without the need for any treatment. Usually if the stroke is what caused the Aphasia, language problems should only really last anything from a few hours to a few days. This is because the blood flow to the brain is only temporarily stopped and it does not cause lasting damage. However, often it does tend to take a lot longer than that to regain full speech and language ability back. In this instance sufferers of Aphasia usually find that speech therapy works quite well. Really it all depends upon how damaged the brain is and which type of Aphasia the person has.
Generally treatment mainly does involve speech therapy and there are also group as well as individual settings in which treatment is also offered. For example, there are various stroke centres which may be able to help and there are also certain things that family members and friends can do to help such as keeping sentences as short as possible and to minimise as many distractions as possible.
