I Have A Classic Saab 900 Turbo And Am Hearing A Ticking Noise From The Cams, Is This Normal?
1 Answer - Sort by: Date | Rating
The 16 valve engine has hydraulic cam followers that operate the valves. These cam followers are completely service-free, the valve clearance having been set accurately at the factory and, in theory, not requiring further adjustment.
However, under certain conditions the hydraulic cam followers are known to emit a ticking noise. In most circumstances, the noise is usually only heard for a few seconds immediately after the engine has been started while oil pressure is building up.
That said, it is possible the ticking noise may last longer than this if air has entered the lubricating systems following an oil or oil filter change or if the car has been standing for a long time. In this case, the ticking noise may last as long as fifteen minutes after starting up. This, again, is normal and does not indicate anything untoward.
In either instance, do not exceed 3,000 revs per minute until the ticking noise has stopped.
