Brainstorming can be explained as a method adopted to solve problems with the help of spontaneous ideas contributed by the members of a group. It is a very creative technique to generate ideas to solve the problem. This term first originated in a book titled Applied Imagination by Alex F. Osborn in 1957. A brainstorming session may provide the entire solution to a problem, a list of suggestions to approach the problem or just some random ideas that may help in solving the issue at hand. Blue-sky thinking is another process with similarities to brain storming.

It is generally used in business planning, advertising, problem solving, project management, team building and other activities. It can be done individually or in a group. There are four factors to be taken into consideration to make a brain storming session successful. They are Focus on quantity, Don't criticize others ideas, Unusual ideas should be welcomed and Combine to improve ideas. The session itself can be divided into three parts as setting the problem, generating ideas and selecting the most appropriate idea.
