The term 'developing' is usually applied to certain countries in Africa, Asia or South America. There are a number of different definitions of a 'developing country.' The World Bank defines a country's position by its per capita income; a country with an average of less than $875 per person per year is classed as 'low income', while 'lower-middle income' means an average of up to $3,400.
The United Nations has a broader definition. Like the World Bank it has a separate list for the poorest nations or Least Developed Countries (LDCs), and one of its criteria is per capita income. However, it also defines an LDC as having 'Human Resources Weaknesses' (poor education, health and nutrition levels) and 'Economic Vulnerability' (weakness and instability in infrastructure, production etc, and vulnerability to natural disasters).
A list of the world's 50 least developed countries can be found on the World Trade Organization website (www.wto.org).
