How Is The Name Anthony Pronounced?

Answer Question

1 Answer - Sort by: Date | Rating

In the US, it is pronounced ANTH-ony, and in the UK it is ANT-ony, though the spelling is the same. Anthony is an English version of the old Roman family name Antonius (as in Marcus Antonius, or Mark Antony.) The name itself is of pre-Roman origin, possibly Etruscan, and its meaning is uncertain. In the Christian era it early became popular as a first name with religious, rather than classical, associations. This was because there were several saints and martyrs with the name Antony (the "th" spelling developed later) especially a 3rd century monk who is said to have started the European Christian monastic movement.

There are many variants of this name in different European languages, such as the French Antoine and the Italian Antonio. Anton, originally Germanic or Slavic, is now sometimes used in English-speaking countries too. The feminine form Antonia was in use in Roman times; later variants include Antoinette and Antoinette. The usual short form of Anthony is Tony (or, especially for girls, Toni) though Ant has recently become more widespread, probably because of TV presenters Ant and Dec.
