Many people in the days before antibiotics, died of the plague, later called the black plague, because the first stages is infection, surrounded by sores, later, it becomes airborn, and is inhaled in the lungs.  The plague, or black plague exists to this day, you can find carriers of the plagues in tick and even squirrels in the Grand Canyon, or the northern prairies in Canada.  The plague exists most everywhere, but because of better hygene, and better medicine - antibiotics, penicillin, the plague has almost been eliminated.  Mind you, you must be careful of consuming or coming into contact with certain animals, as they are wild and have not had their "shots", like we do when we are kids, to prevent us from getting certain illnesses  -    In short, especially in mid-evil times, thousands upon thousands dies of the plague.  Aids was considered a plague of sorts when first discovered but now, even though there is yet a vaccinne to prevent contracting aids, there are many medicines that can prevent it from becoming fatal.
