The United States follows the two-party system in the political arena. In other words, there are only two major political parties in the United States namely the Democrats and the Republicans. It is not a recent development. This is a historic legacy that has been carried forward by the Americans over the years. It was the framing of the constitution that had bifurcated the Americans into the Federalists and Anti-federalists.
However after the addition of the bill of rights to the US constitution, there was not a major point of opposition between the two parties. However in the mid of 1820's the unit that consisted of Federalists and Non-federalists as a unified power broke into different segments. The first segment was the Democratic party that mainly supported the farmers and working people while the other party was the Republican party who supported a more industrial mode of economy that consisted of bankers, merchants and manufacturers. In the later years, this difference also became the chief cause that led to the American Civil War.
