Ann Rule's grandfather was a sheriff of the state of Michigan, as was one of her uncles. One of Ms. Rule's cousins was a prosecuting attorney. Another uncle was a medial examiner.

With a family background like hers, it was not surprising that Ms. Rule's childhood ambition was to work in the law enforcement department herself. She joined the police department in the city of Seattle, which is located in the state of Washington in the United States of America.

She has also worked as a caseworker for the department of public assistance in the state of Washington. In addition to this, she was a student intern at the state training school for girls in Oregon. Her experience as a police officer proved immensely useful to her while researching for her true crime novels.
