What Is A Cockatiel?

A cockatiel is a small parrot native to Australia. It is part of the Cacatuidae family, and is distinguished by its erectible yellow crest, which becomes erect when startled. It has facial feathers that cover the beak, and has long tail feathers. Its plumage is conventionally greyish, with an orange cheek patch and a white blaze on the wings. Female cockatiels are primarily separated visually by a row of yellow spots under their wings, and by barred tail feathers. Male cockatiels also tend to have a larger spread of yellow colouration around their heads. They are known to live for roughly 15-20 years, and are traditionally found in arid or semi-arid regions. Pet cockatiels are bred in captivity, and are often bred to produce different colouration patterns. They are known for being quiet and even tempered birds, although they do have the ability to mimic beeping noises, such as a car alarm.
