How Mant Judges Does The Supreme Court Have?

Answer Question

1 Answer - Sort by: Date | Rating

The United States Supreme Court has nine judges.  Each serves for life once appointed.  That is to say, they can step down when they feel they are ready to retire.  Once they are in, though, they are in; they are appointed, not elected.

They are not accountable to anyone for any decision they make.  Their decisions, unfortunately, often lead to new laws.  This is what is meant by "legislating from the bench."  They do NOT have the authority to dictate policy, even though they do.  They are only allowed to determine which existing laws are constitutional.  And what's more, the Congress can determine which cases the Supreme Court can and can't rule on (though the Congress doesn't use this power).

As an aside: Of all the sections of the Constitution, the section on the Supreme Court is the shortest.  The section on the Congress is the longest.
