Initially, 80 women were recruited to the Woolwich Arsenal through the London Society. They opened training schools in welding for the aircraft industry. They also set up the Scottish Woman's Hospital Units and employed a female team of doctors, nurses and ambulance drivers to work on the front line of war in the worst fighting zones. The NUWSS provided medical relief to civilian populations in parts of Europe disturbed by the war. But they did remain committed to woman's suffrage. Its organisational structure remained intact. It could recommence its activities when the time was right. The NUWSS was still able to lobby parliament and the trade unions.

From the start of the war, women of all social classes were absorbed into the war effort and played a crucial role, particularly on the home front. Billboards reading "The Nation thanks the Women" sprung up throughout the country from 1918. It was the first experience of paid work for many women.
