Some dos and don'ts on dieting are:
DO
See your doctor before taking on any major dietary change.
Weigh yourself on a good (pharmacy?) set of scales before you begin, to know what your starting point is.
Combine your diet with a programme of fitness and exercise, involving a combination of Cardio/Vascular, Fat Burning and Weight work.
drink at least two litres of water per day, not including any other types of drink
DONT
Choose a fad diet, choose one that you will be able to sustain, a points diet is probably the most success type.
Stop eating. Make sure you still eat three times per day, that way you are getting a good amount of food and you won't go hungry.
Eat after eight pm in the evening, it will turn to fat (unless you are particularly active during these hours)
Think that one bar of chocolate doesn't count, you are addicted to sugar, help yourself kick your habit.
