Interesting question.  Herpes and cold sores are related to Chicken Pox and Shingles, so you could wind up with similar symptoms while coming back negative for herpes itself.  I have had shingles around one side of my body, from belly button to backbone, and man was that some painful stuff.  I have seen children (including my son) acquire chickenpox by exposure to a friend of mine who had shingles on his arm that was so bad the blisters were bursting and weeping.  A doctor may say no, but IMO, I would say it is not impossible.
