There are several different interpretations regarding what hell is, and what it is like. It is generally seen by most major religious beliefs as being a place of suffering, where wrongdoers suffer for their sins in life. Hell can also be seen as the final resting place of the Devil, who is alternatively as its ruler or monarch. Another popular image of Hell in literature appears in Dante's Divine Comedy, where it is divided into different levels depending on the severity of the sin committed. In Judaism, Hell is named Gehenna, and represents a closer match to the Christian idea of Purgatory. Islam interprets Hell in a similar way to the Christian equivalent, as a fiery place of pain, which is also split into many levels relative to the evil of the sinner and their divergence from the teachings of Allah. Buddhism and Hinduism both propose a series of relative hells, as well as hell as a form of consciousness. Hell is also presented as the kingdom of Hades in Greek and Roman mythology, where sins are punished.
