Can You Help Me With Another Algebra Problem?

Hi, I have another algebra problem I can't wrap my head around, I'm not sure if its just because I'm tired or what, but I can't get how to do these (or any of the problems) 2(a+6)=10[a-(9-a)] or this one Write the equation as a function of s: 9 = t+5s I'm not sure what exactly writing it as a function is. So if someone could just explain that to me I would be very thankful

    Your first problem solution is as under

    2(a+6)=10[a-(9-a)]
    2a+12=10a-9+a^2
    12+9=10a-2a+a^2
    21=8a+a^2
    21=a(8+a)
