Where Do Turtles Go In The Winter?

Answer Question

1 Answer - Sort by: Date | Rating

Turtles do not go anywhere during winter. They are hibernating animals and hide in their thick and protective shells. They withdraw under their shells and remain so until the harsh winds recedes and the winter season ends with the arrival of spring and summer. Aquatic turtles go back into the water where it might be cold but the water has not frozen. Turtles are also reptiles and hence less require less oxygen than warm blooded mammals.

This quality helps the turtles to easily adapt to the climate. Gopher tortoises make burrows in the snow and hide into them until the return of warm climate. Sea turtles move away to warmer regions under the sea during winter and thus escape the cold. Thus different types of turtles have different ways to escape winter.
