Does A National Crisis Like The Civil War Justify A Suspension Of Civil Liberties?

Answer Question

Questions like these, for instance "Is torture justifiable?" are not that easy to classify as black or white. These are grey areas. Right now there is a civil war going on in Iraq. One of the tactics being put to devastating use by the Sunni insurgents is that of suicide bombings. There is no concept anywhere of considering the civil rights of the bomber before he has struck. Each bomb takes a number of lives and leads to further violence. Preventive action against these acts of insanity is just not practical where it does not invade people civil rights. In such a situation the only option left is to block of roads, invade people's privacy, tap telephones, use monitoring satellites just about any possible measure is acceptable to stop a bomber before he strikes. You may be thinking that that's Iraq; A crazy place! Well not very long back British police shot and killed an Argentinian they believed was carrying a bomb. Well there is a very thin line that exists. If public opinion is a defining criteria for what is acceptable, the moment any society is threatened with sustained terrorist attacks civil liberties are going to go for a toss.
