Philadelphia L & I Question. Can They Get Away With This?

On March 7,2008 I purchased an investment property. There were no city violations on my property. One (1) year prior to my purchase the previous owner made alterations to the home (addition) and did not secure a permit or drawings. In April of this year a L & I inspector shut me down and demand that I supply the proper drawings that the previous owners should have obtained. They know who the previous owner is and they never served me with a violation for what they are requesting of me. This is all verbal from this building inspector. Thank You

By saying the inspector shut you down, implies you were building something, perhaps finishing the addition the previous owner started illegally. If this is the case then the inspector has the right to shut you down until you get permitted. By continuing the work once started the city can make you bring it all up to code. If this is all the correct assumption and you give them much static, they will make you bring everything possible on the premises up to code. When the inspector gives you a verbally he is being nice but doing his job. You should go to them and explain the situation and work with them to rectify the situation.
