The Capitol of the Roman empire was moved to Constantinople from Rome by Emperor Constantine in the early 300s CE. When the great schism caused a breach between the two churches the Eastern Orthodox stayed centered in that city, now called Istanbul, and the Roman Catholic church remained centered in (of course) Rome.
