I grew up in a house with an in-ground pool so as long as I can remember I could swim.  I'm not sure when I first started but I do know that I never used any floats or anything.  I guess I started off with a run :)

I learned how to swim, well, hmmmmm, I taught myself how to swim, no lessons, but I started swimming, not very well, when I was 7, when I was 8 I was a better, but I had to learn to let go of my nose, and when I was 9, I was a decent swimmer, when I was 10, people were impressed, that I knew how to swim so well, but, I just watched everybody, I am happy that I had good role models!!! I started to dive at 10, and was made fun of. :(, but then I tried extra hard, and never dove in front of anyone, and then we moved, and instead of swimming in a lake, I swam in a pretty decent pool, there, one day I met a girl, and she just kept on diving, and diving, and diving, and she was better at diving then I had seen anywhere else!!! Eventually after me watching, and asking 1000 questions, adn she said "You try." So I did, and I did a pretty good dive, remembering everything, and so I kept on practicing, and around a month later, one of my friends asked me if I could do a dive, and I said "not really" but eventually, I went and did a dive, and she was really surprised, and from then on that year, my dive was better than anyone else's dive, and I was very, and still to this day, proud. :) :) :) :) :) happy ending!!! Good swimmer, good dive, but I don't know the correct strokes, still to this day, but can swim about as fast as people who do know them, and I just plain am not allowed to join the swim team, because I don't know the strokes!!! Lol!!! Happy endings!!! :) :) :)!!!!!!

I was one of those pathetic children with utterly no coordination.  I tried to teach myself to swim from the time I was about 6 years old with absolutely no luck whatsoever.  Finally, when I was 12 my mom said enough is enough and signed me up for swimming lessons.  I was mortified, but boy was I ever glad afterwards.  I loved the lessons and so enjoyed finally being able to swim.  I still love it.  By the way, it took me 2-1/2 years of trying every single day to learn to ride a two wheeled bike.  Skating was another nightmare.  Knowing all this, try to picture my ballet lessons.  Sad, truly sad.  But at least I'm not a quitter!

Gosh. It seems like I was born knowing how. I remember swimming when I was three but as I remember the first time I got in and it just came to me.

I never learned how to swim!!!!!!!!!!! I took swimming lessons, both on the lake (I lived near Lake Erie) and at the Y, when I was about ten years old......I got all the moves right, but the instructors just could not believe I could not move, or propel myself in the water!!!!!!! I"d dive in, use my arms and legs as I was supposed to, got the breathing right, etc., go a few feet,  and.... Sink like a stone!!!!!!! So at least I tried!! I did, however, learn one very important thing; how to float!!!! Both instructors showed me how, and I had no trouble learning that.......I am not an outdoors person, and do not esp. Like boating, etc., but if I am ever on a boat and something goes wrong, I can at least float!!!!!!!!

I think that I was about 6  years old and both my older brother and sister wanted me to out to the raft with them actually they dared me and they called me a sissy if I did not go with them.  So I followed them.  When my mom found out she sent out the lifeguard to get me.  I was so humiliated because he would not let me swim back and my brother and sister laughed at me.

I was very young when I learned how to swim. Do you think that it isn't normal for people to not know how to swim? I don't know about that. Anyway, I learned around the age of 3 or 4.

I'm 14 years old and I still haven't learned to swim. Well, swim well for that matter. But because I really need to learn soon now that I'm going into high school, I'm guessing I learned how to swim around a month in the future. Gym requirement.

I was 9.  I was always crawling around the bottom of the bluffhole chasing crawdads and tadpoles.  My uncle taught me to swim underwater, first, so I had no fear if I sank.  How wise!  In P.E. In 9th grade we had to do 10 laps underwater, and when I finished everyone was laughing.  Seems my head was under and I was stroking away, but my rump was cruising like a buoy the whole time.  My teacher finally let go of her sides and marked me as passing.

Saimaiman. Thank you for the reference. However, I do not know how to swim. Being as impecunious as we are, I never had the chance to learn. We do not live near any bodies of water and no one in my family can swim either(yes, it is true). I wouldn't mind learning how, mind. It has always been something I wanted to do before my days end.
