What Makes The Rattlesnake Rattle?

Answer Question

1 Answer - Sort by: Date | Rating

The rattles of the rattlesnake are made of hard, horny and cup-shaped joints. They are fitted loosely into one another. When a rattlesnake becomes excited or frightened, its tail begins to vibrate. This vibration causes the joints, or rattles to strike together. The sound that is produced is a kind of sharp, whirring noise. It can be heard as far as 18 meters away.

A new rattle is formed on the snake's tail each time it sheds its skin. But that does not mean that it can tell the age of the snake from the numbers of rattles, since a snake sheds its skin two to four times a year. Also, as a rattlesnake grows older, the rattles at the end of the tail break off.
