    On this day in history, the 18th of April:

    On this day in 1906, the Great San Francisco destroyed most of San Francisco and killed over three thousand people. Burst water mains and many fires made things very difficult for authorities to take control of the area. Looters were shot on sight. Not much has changed there then.

    On this day in 1806 the US boycotted all British goods.

    On this day in 1915, the French airmen Roland Garos was shot down by German troops, attached to the railway protection guard. Garos was on a bombing mission.

    On this day in 1983, a suicide bomber killed sixty three people at the US embassy in Beirut.

    On this day in 2006, Katie Holmes and Tom Cruise had a baby girl named Suri.

    On this day in 1956, the Premium Bond scheme was unveiled by Prime Minister of the UK, Harold MacMillan.
