Well sometimes modeling can take a turn for the worst and they want to protect you from it. Modeling is a buisness that can get very competitive in a bad way. The girls want to be the prettiest or the best, which never turns out good.

See, my sis has been asked to model a couple times, but my mom won't let her because she is afraid my sis will become full of herself!

As a parent I think the images of half starved, drug doing, way out models, probably plays in their mind. Continue to prove to them that you can be a sensible and smart Model, let them review your contracts and meet some of the people you are working with, to ease their mind. When they see how successful and happy you are, they will adjust.

      THERE CAN BE TWO REASONS:
FIRST ONE REMAINS WHAT "hellopeopl" mentioned but second one can be that models'  profession can be some time very short often longing with looks. Also models coz of too much starving can become very frustrated natured & too much negative politics in that profession also is the reason for your mothers' worry.
JUST PROVE YOURSELF MORE CONFIDENT, THAT YOU CAN HANDLE YOUR TEARS & THAT YOU WILL REMAIN PROFESSIONAL & WON'T FELL FOR SOMEONE'S SWEET FLIRTY WORDS EASILY.
Why don't you also go for acting(potential models can also be good actors), although acting might not be that much free from ugly phase but it is more long term carer than modelling(just a suggestion-sorry if u did't liked it)
