Lipids are inorganic compounds which are not essential for the human body.
They are insoluble in water and are easily removed from the human body. They retain these properties because they consist of carbon. Lipids are used for energy storage and some of them are also important hormones. They help in the formation of the cell membrane structure and also act as a barrier for the cell.
They are storage house of energy as they contain high ratio of carbon to oxygen. Here an oxidation reaction will take place whereas the rate of catabolism will be greater. Lipids are also known as mediators between the cells and transmit information in cells.
It is a concerning fact that in a number of human disease, like cancer and cardiovascular disease, sometimes in a detrimental or in a beneficial manner, lipids are required.
