If one would want to take an earlier or a later flight on the same day as the scheduled flight, flying standby would be the cheaper option as on does not have to pay a change fee.

Majority of the airlines offer similar procedures for standby flights. In order to fly standby, one should check in either at a self service kiosk or even at the ticket counter of the airline that one is flying. If there is availability of seats on another flight that suits your needs, you will be put on standby. Then you can carry on through security to the gate of departure. The attendant at the departure gate generally allows passengers that are already confirmed through the gate first, and if there is space free, one can board the plane.
