The landlord is responsible to provide you the apartment in the living condition. The sewerage pipe if burst should be repaired by the landlord. You must know the law of your state about repair. I am not sure how much time the landlord can take to repair the damage according to the law in your state.

I had this exact problem. I had rented a guest house, and had only lived there 2 months when the house flooded with sewage. Here in California we were able to have the landlord pay for our initial hotel fees, then ran into problems. They did give me my entire security dep back, but after that the atty stated that it was my responsibility to have renters insurance. Contact the city, show them that the house is uninhabitable, and contact your local courthouse. They generally have advisers there to assist you with landlord tenant disputes so you can find out your states laws.
