The earth is on a tilt on its axis (i think its 26 degrees off the top of my head but i can't be sure about that) therefore as it orbits the sun at one point during the orbit the northern hemisphere will be leaning toward the sun more and the southern hemisphere less and vice-versa so that's why when its summer in the northern hemisphere it is winter below in the south. The variation of exposure to light and relative proximity to the sun accounts for the variations we experience in the seasons. The equator is always in the centre relative to its distance from the sun within the orbit, and therefore does not experience the variations of day and night length and the seasons. However due to weather systems some of the areas around the equator do experience "seasonal" weather variations. I'm sorry this answer is so wordy, as a couple of simple diagrams could explain it all so simply.
