You always have to give 30 days' notice--that's what "month-to-month" means. It also means your landlord only has to give you thirty days to leave.

You need to give 30 days notice as well as the landlord owes you the same courtesy. If you find someone to sublet, the landlord might not hold you to the 30 days.
