These words are spoken by Lysander in the first scene of "A Midsummer Night's Dream," and they establish the play's theme. Egeus, an Athenian citizen, wants to marry his daughter Hermia to a young man called Demetrius. She refuses, both because she loves someone else (Lysander) and because Demetrius has already promised marriage to her childhood friend Helena, whom he has now abandoned. Egeus appeals to the Duke of Athens, who agrees that Hermia must obey her father on pain of death. The lovers escape into the woods; Demetrius follows them, and Helena, still madly in love, pursues Demetrius.
The resulting confusion is made worse by Oberon, king of the fairies, and his servant Puck, who try to help by giving the sleeping Demetrius a love-charm to make him fall in love with Helena again. Unfortunately Puck gets the wrong man, Oberon tries to put things right, and soon both men are frantically chasing a furious Helena – who thinks it's all a cruel joke – and ignoring Hermia. In the end the couples are sorted out, Egeus relents and all ends happily.
