How Many Britons Suffer From Senile Dementia?
Answers
There have been no recent comprehensive studies to gauge the number of Britons suffering from senile dementia. It is estimated that around 700000 Britons suffer from dementia. Of these 700000, a little over 55% suffer from Alzheimer's disease. However, more recent statistics show that between 500,000 and 700,000 people may be affected by senile dementia in Italy alone.
Senile dementia is generally seen in people over 60 years of age. Women are more susceptible to this disease. Family history is a rather minor risk factor. In very rare cases, it has been observed that genetic changes in the family lead to Senile Dementia. Unlike most of the other cases of Alzheimer's (one of the main causes of Senile dementia), which set in only after 60 years, these patients are invariably younger, even as young as 30. Scientists however do not rule out the possibility that genetics may play a role even in late-onset Alzheimer's, especially if it is combined with other non-genetic factors.
