Costs partly depend a lot on where you live. I'm giving you typical US costs (in US $). Probably about the same in £ if you're in the UK.
How old is the kitten? Kittens shouldn't leave their mums until at least 6 weeks, and preferably more like 10 weeks old. From that age to 6 months they need to live on special kitten food (not adult cat food). They need to eat more frequently than and adult cat, too.
For a kitten under 4 months plan to give them two soft food meals a day (either wet food or dry food soaked in water), plus free access to dry food and little drinks of milk -- and leave water out all the time. Do change the water daily, though!
Don't worry about obesity at this age, let kitten eat as much as they like. After 4 months, you can change to feeding just 2x a day. And after 6 months, you can change to adult cat food.
Take it to local vet to ask about what regular care and standard jabs they recommend. They start getting jabs at about 12 weeks old. The first year is the most expensive. I would expect to spend $350-$500 on kitten that first year, between food (~$120), basic vet checks (~$100), neutering/spaying ($40-$120), possible de-worming and vaccinations (~$100).
Plus, you will have to figure out where kitty "goes" -- outdoors or a litter tray? Litter is another cost.Basically, pets are expensive. And they are a big responsibility.
