MBNA stands for Maryland Bank, National Association. Founded in 1959 as Citizens Bank of St. Mary's, the first location and main office was opened in Lexington Park, Maryland.
In 1997, the Bank became a National Bank regulated by the Office of the Comptroller of the Currency, adding National Association (N.A.) to its name.
Today, the assets of Maryland Bank and Trust Company, N.A. are approaching $300 million.
