A computer has no "Main" component, because a computer needs multiple things for it to function.
The basic components of a computer are:
Power supply
Motherboard (systemboard / mainboard)
Processor
RAM
Depending on the motherboard, you may not have a video card.

Add to the above a storage device of some kind, ie. Hard drive, floppy drive, or you wont be able to load your Operating System or then save your work. Motherboards these days are usually integrated with a video processor. Since you said System, you need a monitor as well.

A hard drive is considered secondary because you do not require it to run. There are Linux Live CDs that run an OS off the CD ROM, as with flash drives. Computers can PXE-Boot (aka dumb terminals) and can run windows XP off another machine, while having no hard drive. Hollywood Video uses that kind of POS setup.
Having been here a while, most want answers for the average situation. Linux and PXE boot are fringe and not for the avg consumer . Want to get some work done, I give the answer at the high school/college level I mostly find here, you will need a hard drive. I like fringe stuff but I answer these trying to mirror the level of the questioner. PC consulting last 19 years, every PC I worked on had hard drive (or dual floppies). I tried and liked OS2 but haven't seen it on a PC yet other my own.
