Chandra Gupta, who enjoyed the title "King of Kings," controlled much of the Ganges River region in northern India, as well as the Prayaga region in central India from the year 319 AD. The most important aspect of Gupta's empire was that he controlled commerce and trade in the region, as much of this was conducted along the Ganges.

Gupta ruled the entire area for ten years and gave his kingdom over to his son, Samudra, following his death who then tried to extend his father's kingdom through a long series of military campaigns. Samudra Gupta enjoyed a great deal of military success and was able to take over Bengal, while he collected taxes and tributes from Nepal and Assam.

Samudra was followed by his son Chandra Gupta II in 380 AD who was successful in expanding Gupta's Empire towards the west, especially along the coastal areas. The standard of life improved for most subjects of the Gupta Empire, mainly as a result of the kingdom's economic success, gained by controlling numerous trade routes. This period was also somewhat of a renaissance for literature and the arts, while Hinduism became an integral part of life in the region.
