What Can I Do If My Daughter Wants To Become A Painter But I Always Wanted Her To Become A Doctor?

Answer Question

This is one of the most common problems parents have to face when their children are growing and deciding what career to choose. However, every one is free in this world and has the right to do what ever they wish to; parents are there to guide their children.

Being a painter is not a bad thing in fact it is one of the most creative and respectful career. Okay it might not pay off as well as a doctor gets paid, however people who love painting and are creative are in a different world and can not be happy if they are not doing some thing creative.

However, I would suggest you try talking to your daughter, but do not force her or show signs of anger if she suggests she wants to be a painter. Point out facts why you want her to be a doctor and why it is better for her future. It is always better to talk out things with children rather than enforce rules on them especially if they are about to become adults themselves.

Probably after talking to her, you might get convinced too for her choosing to be a painter. Once there is an understanding between you guys I am sure some thing can be worked out. Be her friend rather than a parent and have a proper discussion.

Never stop being a parent but learn to reach out to your daughter as a friend. Perhaps encourage both as a hobby.

I am shocked at this question and more so the answer!!!!!

how dare say being a doctor is "better for her future"!!!!! who are you to say that? Have you every painted?????

I'm a painter although I started my life doing a degree in psychology which was a huge waste of time.

Being a painter opens a different world that only a select few get the honor to experience.

I hope your daughter becomes a painter....as it will teach her a life lesson and yourself a huge lesson.......which is life is too short to do something everyday that you don't want to do.

Life is all about letting go and taking risks and finding ourselves...that's how we learn....allow your daughter to learn and to live HER life.

I would fist have a heart to heart with her , see why she wants to be a painter. But don't condemn her for it ,you can't live your children's lives for them. Did you become what your parents wanted you to? Painters house or otherwise can make very good money. Remember your daughter has a mind of her own and if you taught her to be responsible. She will be and she's not you. Let her live her own life not the one you want her to live, or in other words, don't make the life you wanted through your daughter. You are a smart lady you'll do fine.

Maybe being a Doctor would not make her happy.  It is a very stressful job and puts a person in contact with a lot of pain and misery.  Some people cope with this in a positive way and others may become distant and cold as a defence.  Others just don't cope at all.  Let your daughter tell you how she feels about career choices, and remember money does not make up for doing a job you are not suited to.

Don't push her into something she doesn't want to do.Kinda show her some things that are interesting in the field she(or u) are looking into. But if she is really passionate toward painting then just let her follow her dreams. Also explain that if she does become a doctor that she can still do painting during her spare time. And the money is REALLY good if she does doctor!
