What Could It Mean When A Dog Urinates Blood?

My 10 year old Maltese has been urinating blood for 3 days and is currently on antibiotics from the vet for another 7 days. There's no presence of kidney stones upon palpitation and his vet thinks it could be an infection or perhaps cancer. Any one have an idea? My dog behaves like normal and doesn't seem to be in pain, but when he has to "go" he can't seem to hold it and there is the presence of clots.

I would lean on my Vet, to investigate, the cause of this. Perhaps you can pull something up off the computer. Follow through until you get a serious answer.

Thank you pencil. You are so good to get back with me so soon after I asked the question. As I'm sure you could guess, I love my dog very much. Crying doesn't help him much, but it sure helps me to relieve my stress. I recently lost my mother to cancer and I sure would not want to see my four-legged friend meet the same fate.
