The Dominican Republic is the earliest amongst all the European
colonies which are located in the western hemisphere. In 1492, Christopher Columbus came to Mole- saint-Nicholas which is in the north west of what is now called Haiti. He claimed this island for Spain and named it La Española. Later on in 1795, the entire island went under the rule of the French.
