How Do You Leave The Habit Of Procrastination?

Answer Question

3 Answers - Sort by: Date | Rating

It is a tough habit to break. I feel that it warrants more thought. My suggestion would be to take a while to ponder the reasons for your procrastination, think about it a little more, and then decide as to whether or not you need to reconsider your whole attitude. You need to take time with this issue; there is no need to rush. If this does not work, then just put it off until you're in a better frame of mind to cope.

Do you know that old saying "procrastination is the thief of time"? I never used to understand what it really meant. When I finally understood it, it helped me to overcome this habit in myself, so maybe it will help you too.

I now see "putting things off" as a bit like not going to the dentist if you have a toothache. You know the pain will only get worse, and yet. But if you have ever had a really bad toothache, you know that you basically have no choice - you HAVE to go to the dentist - and you do it because you know the alternative is worse.

Well, that's how procrastination works. Like toothache, it makes things worse and finally unbearable. A small task becomes a horrible burden if you don't fix it soon - and you will POISON your precious time, thinking about the task waiting for you. That's why procrastination is really a thief - you lose both the time you need for the task, and all the time which you ruin by thinking about it.

So, don't delay, do that job today!

This is a hard habit to break, because it has been formed over time and most people who have this habit often refuse to acknowledge that they have it. So you are ahead of the pack, if you can admit that you do procrastinate.
In my experience this habit often involves the action of talking about the task, or  the responsibilities associated with it rather than just getting down to them. Talking about something should not be confused with action.
One way to break the habit is to ban yourself from talking about it, since this is your way of making yourself feel better about not having done the task.
So not talking about it until its finished, that is the rule, and this way you will wean yourself off the habit of chatting about it, over action.
I suggest you start out the day with a list of things you want to achieve that day, and take great pleasure in the process of ticking off each completed item.
